Terrain and landmarks

KTM2's terrain families, the unique World Tree, atmosphere and operator location commands.

Updated Sep 26, 2026 6 min read

KTM2 combines a bundled ReTerraForged landscape with 20 custom terrain families. Mountains, settlement plains, a saved World Tree and exotic districts share the Overworld, with placement constrained by the original geography.

The exotic family IDs are category identities for location commands. Generated exotic biomes use palette names: isekaiexpansion:crystal_land_amethyst (Amethyst Barrens), isekaiexpansion:aquapolis_calcite (Whitewater Aquapolis) and isekaiexpansion:evernight_tundra_boreal (Boreal Ossuary). The default sky palette creates Skyreach Highlands, Skyreach Groves and Skyreach Lake Gardens under giant_sky_land_verdant, giant_sky_land_verdant_grove and giant_sky_land_verdant_wetland, all in the isekaiexpansion namespace.

The additional default palette IDs are isekaiexpansion:abyssal_volcano_basalt, isekaiexpansion:garden_of_the_firmament_verdant, isekaiexpansion:giant_stone_valley_weathered, isekaiexpansion:riftborne_monolith_riftstone, isekaiexpansion:infernal_deep_cavern_basalt, isekaiexpansion:sunken_azure_grotto_azure, isekaiexpansion:viridian_toxic_depths_viridian, isekaiexpansion:worldroot_hollow_ancient.

World creation and placement

The default world preset uses KTM2 automatically; the customisation screen is a read-only view, not an activation step. Dedicated-server dimension creation also selects this default. Turning off custom terrain does not restore an unrelated world preset.

District selection is deterministic for a seed and configuration, but a placement roll is not a promise that every grid cell contains a landmark. Complete shapes must fit permitted geography and available height without colliding with reserved plains or the World Tree. Sentinel Isles seek oceans, Verdant Knives seek mountains, and Amber Basin seeks high ground; most surface exotic districts require comparatively level inland sites. Abyssal Volcano also accepts inland highlands, subject to the full-caldera and build-height checks. Underground families instead seek high ground, keep the original surface height and carve sealed chambers beneath continuous rock cover.

Skyreach, Firmament and Riftborne keep the underlying ground-height system intact. Riftborne’s detached rock stays at its own altitude during biome blending, above its shaped valley and pedestal. Firmament has grassy caps over soil, with complete waterfalls descending to receiving pools. Exotic lakes vary in orientation, shoreline and depth. Within owned exotic terrain, vanilla cave biomes such as Deep Dark give way to the exotic biome; underground ownership is limited to the chamber and its surrounding buffer. Outside owned terrain, biome selection falls back to the original source.

The World Tree and Great Plains

The World Tree reserves one site and stores its coordinates, branching design and extent. On an existing world without a reservation, selection is moved beyond existing Overworld region files before searching. Restarting restores the saved reservation; changing search settings does not move it. An invalid saved reservation or one that no longer fits the build height stops attachment instead of silently selecting a new tree.

Great Plains use a separate planner and a buildable core that can shrink when the preferred size does not fit. Their centre varies gently rather than becoming a mathematically flat platform. Both kinds of reserved landscape take precedence over ordinary districts.

Local skies and other systems

InteractionBehaviour
Crystal atmosphereClient flashes and delayed thunder use local biome blending; they do not change global weather.
Evernight atmosphereDark sky and aurora are presentation effects; the server’s world time is unchanged.
No active shader packA fallback dome, aurora and crystal flash render when visibility allows. Foggy/submerged views suppress that overlay.
Active Iris shader packThe fallback is suppressed. The automatic overlay recognises compatible Eclipse/Bliss source layouts; an unsupported layout retains its original sources.
New surface atmospheresVolcanic ember haze, pale highland light and cloud shelves, dusty valley light, and cold rift haze blend across biome edges in supported shader packs.
Cavern atmospheresInfernal warmth, azure water light, green low mist and muted root glow use the same shader overlay.
Toxic poolsWith the default setting, water contact in Viridian Toxic Depths applies Poison to survival/adventure players. Creative and spectator players are excluded; viridianToxicDepths.toxicWater disables this behaviour.
Shader preferenceautoPatchExoticShaders is local. A compatible overlay is applied in memory when the pack loads, without rewriting the pack.
ConfigurationThe server owns generation and synchronises terrain presentation settings at login through IsekaiCore 0.4.0-build60. Already generated chunks are not rebuilt by a config edit.

Finding a landmark

Operator commands require permission level 2. The short root /ise is equivalent to /isekaiexpansion.

CommandResult
/ise terrain locate <family> [radius]Searches a family from the table. Radius defaults to 64000, allowed range 1024–64000; the search excludes positions within 512 blocks of the origin.
/ise terrain landmark world_treeReports the saved/planned World Tree anchor in an active KTM2 Overworld.

Location search uses terrain descriptors and verifies the biome without generating target chunks. It can return no match within the limit. The coordinate suggestion preserves current Y with ~; it is not a safe-arrival teleport. See wayfinding for search lifecycle and result handling.

Where the data lives

Server options and all palette defaults are documented in terrain configuration. The packaged preset lives at data/isekaiexpansion/terrain/ktm2.json; terrain generation covers its implementation, persistence and shader integration.
