Aurelia is built on seven terraces. The top holds the papal offices and the cathedral; the bottom is the waiting light district, where refugees, patients’ families and cheap lodging houses are.
The white you see from a distance is local pale stone and regular lime disinfection, not a miracle of spotlessness. After rain, the drains show you herbs, wax and the colour of ordinary life.
Going up
You climb with the pilgrim flow from the lowest terrace. Each tier is quieter, cleaner, and demands more proof of who you are. The first route takes you past the refectory, the registry, and the White Veil hospital before the cathedral is even visible — you learn how faith works here before you meet its power.
Good standing opens the internal galleries. Poor standing means moving through public queues and mutual-aid networks instead. Making beds, tracing medicine and escorting patients usually beat trying to sneak.
