What it claims
The See teaches that suffering comes from an original sin — humanity’s estrangement from the Holy Light — and that purification, service and order return a soul to it.
The Light is not fiction. Successive generations of the See really have preserved the most mature systems of healing, purification and post-disaster care in existence. Ordinary believers are not being credulous: at the worst moment of their lives, somebody genuinely did carry medicine and hot water out of a church.
Where it goes wrong
Post-Divine-Age political narrative gradually equated demons and the dark element with that original sin, which means the medical apparatus and the apparatus of exclusion grew up inside the same paperwork.
The file that lets someone be treated and the file that lets someone be turned away are frequently the same file.
