KTM2 moves to 1.20.1

After two or three years parked on 1.19.2, KTM2 is stepping forward. The port itself was finished long ago — what took the time was everything around it.

An arcane crystal shrine at night

For the past two or three years I have been a holdout on 1.19.2.

I was worn down, honestly. Minecraft shipped version after version, each one generating a pile of repeated work for mod developers, and most of that work never turned into anything a player could feel. My judgement at the time was that staying put and spending the effort on content beat chasing the treadmill.

That judgement has changed. Vulkan rendering is landing, the modding ecosystem is moving, and staying on 1.19.2 would mean KTM2 slowly losing the underlying capabilities I actually need.

So KTM2 is moving to 1.20.1.

The port was not the hard part

The technical port has been about 99% done for a while. What ate the time is the overhaul it dragged along with it.

UI. Most screens are being redrawn. A lot of the old ones were temporary solutions I threw together in 2023, and there is no longer any reason to keep them.

Textures. Palette and pixel density are now consistent. Put the old batches side by side and you could tell at a glance they were made by the same person in several different moods.

Localisation. All in-mod text went through a full reorganisation, English and Chinese filed by category, duplicate keys now failing at assembly time. Dull work, but every future addition gets cheaper because of it.

What I am working on next

Original structures. There are no off-the-shelf structure mods in KTM2. Towns, generated structures and dungeons are all built for this pack, then placed onto ReTerraForged terrain by their own generation rules — so the buildings are handmade and the world is still generated.

Narrative. The NPC systems, branching dialogue and quest lines are being rebuilt. The goal is for an interaction to be memorable rather than a vending machine for an item.

Immersive crafting. I am moving crafting out of the 3×3 grid. Forgery and blueprint research are in; metallurgy and alchemy are still on the way.

Thanks to everyone who has been waiting. 1.20.1 is the foundation for a long while now.
